Asst Chief John Caviness LCVRS & LCFR Dispatch
With sadness, we heard of the passing on Nov. 2, 2009 of "Johnny Jack" Caviness, Past Asst. Chief of the Loudoun County
Volunteer Rescue Squad, and one of the original 4
charter dispatchers for Loudoun County Fire Rescue.
Below is the obituary release from one of his children, Jack Caviness Jr.:
John will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his friends, and to the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad he loved so much -
the same Rescue Squad that wife Joyce loved as well.
Joyce left us with fond memories as well.
![]() John was one of the first four dispatchers when Loudoun County "Fire Control" was created in 1957. In the picture below you will see
John, Deck Warner, "Big Jim" Anderson (my grandfather),
and (standing) Jack Walsh.
These were the men who worked 24/7/365 at the first dispatch center, a one room operation, in what is now the entrance to the courthouse complex on Market St, across from the Post Office.
They started with 1 emergency phone line, one single channel radio (Call sign KIU-862), and the only link to emergency fire and rescue for all of Loudoun County!
Many of us will remember his smile, his dispatch of "Chimley fires,"
and his sense of humor.
